Petrof Pianos: A Legacy of Resilience and Europe’s Bohemian Tradition

At Carlingford Music Centre, we have a deep appreciation for instruments with “soul”. While many modern pianos focus on sheer power, Petrof remains the standard-bearer for the “round full Romantic” European tone & sound.

From our Sydney showroom, we’ve seen generations of Australian pianists fall in love with the velvety, rounded tone that only a hand-built instrument from the musical heart of Europe, Hradec Králové.

A Story of Resilience: From Imperial Warrants to Family Return

The Petrof story is one of the most remarkable in the piano world. Founded in 1864 by Antonín Petrof, the company quickly rose to become the pride of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, earning an Imperial and Royal Warrant.

Despite the challenges of the 20th century—including four decades of state nationalisation—the Petrof family never lost their musical passion. Following the Velvet Revolution in 1991, the family successfully reclaimed their legacy. Today, led by Anna & Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová (5th & 6th generation), Petrof has returned to its roots: focusing on high-quality hand-craftsmanship and world-leading innovations like the Ant. Petrof Premium Series.

The Signature “Romantic” Sound

Ask any regular at our Carlingford store to describe a Petrof, and they’ll use words like silky velvet, warm, and singing tone.

FeatureThe Petrof DifferenceCMC Expert Assessment
ToneWarm & SingingA rich, resonant bass paired with a bell-like treble that lacks the “brittleness” found in mass-produced pianos.
TouchMedium-FirmProvides a sophisticated level of resistance, allowing for incredible control over delicate phrasing.
BuildEuropean Excellence100% European-sourced materials, including solid spruce from the Bohemian mountain forests of central Europe.

Why the “solid Firm” Touch?
Petrof pianos are known for a medium-firm touch weight. This is intentional. It provides the “push-back” needed for a vast dynamic range. While beginners might find it slightly firm or heavier than a standard Japanese piano, advancing students and professionals in the Sydney music scene prefer it for the nuanced control it offers during ANZCA or AMEB & other graded exams.

Premium Components: The Secret to Respect & Longevity

Petrof combines traditional world-famous Czech joinery alongside the most prestigious German components:

  • Renner Actions: in most of the flagship models, like the Ant. Petrof 136 and the P125, P131, and P135 feature genuine Renner actions—the same manufacturer trusted by Steinway & Sons.
  • Abel or Renner Hammers: These German-made hammers use high-quality wool felt to produce that signature “velvety” tone.
  • Bohemian Spruce Keys: Solid, high-altitude spruce ensures the keys remain straight and responsive, even in the varying humidity of the New South Wales climate.

Is a Secondhand Petrof a Good Investment?

Absolutely. Because Petrof has consistently used high-grade parts (Renner, Abel, Detoa), a pre-owned Petrof is an incredibly safe investment for Australian families.

At Carlingford Music Centre, we see “old friends” return to upgrade models with us. We regularly take Petrofs in on Tradin or part-exchange, knowing our technicians can regulate them back to that beautiful factory feel & tone.
