This setting of See amid the winterŒÍs snow was written for Philip Redfern and the choir of St GeorgeŒÍs School, Edinburgh, who first performed it in December 2014. The lovely words, which IŒÍve adapted slightly from the 19th-century carol by Edward Caswall, have been a part of my Christmas celebrations for as long as I can remember, and there are several wonderful tunes associated with the text. In writing this new melody I wanted to explore again the timeless nature of the poetry. This setting should be performed with a gentle forward energy but always with a legato and expressive sound.
